3 Career-Changing Behaviors You’re Going to Hate (But Should Do Anyway)

Did you ever have something to do and you just didn’t feel like it?

.

Ha! Happens to me all the time. Like if it’s time to go work out, or I need to return a bunch of phone calls. (That’s my introvert flag flying there…)

.

I can come up with any number of ways to avoid doing things I don’t like, am not particularly good at, or that I know I’m probably not going to do perfectly.

.

However, at work, this kind of behavior can really hold you back. Research shows one of the most rewarding aspects of work is a feeling of “getting stuff done.”

.

In fact, studies find that the single most important aspect of job satisfaction is “making progress.”

3 Things You're Going to Hate To Do

.

As much as you’d like to harangue your boss or kooky co-workers for making your life more difficult, the fact is that you have a lot more control over your own job satisfaction than you may think.

.

Here’s how Teresa M. Amabil, co-author of The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work summed it up:

.

“We found that of all the events that characterized the best inner work life days, by far the most prominent was making progress. And of all the events that characterized the worst days, by far the most prominent was setbacks — feeling like you’ve lost ground on a project.”

.

That’s interesting. So when you procrastinate, put things off, delay, avoid, live in fear, you are contribute to your own “worst day” scenario.

.

If you’d like to change that, I have some ideas. In this week’s TheMuse.com column, I discuss 3 bad habits on this topic that you may have at work, and how to overcome them.

.

If you make a commitment to doing things differently in this space, it’s going to really set you up for a transformative year. Give it a read and let me know what you think!
