Are you working on these 2 things?

“Do stuff. Be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.”

– Susan Sontag

Looking at our most popular posts this last year, I have two observations:

#1: Learning to work effectively with other people is an ongoing challenge.

Relationships are how we get work done, so other people are a critically important part of our success equation. But it’s not always easy, and it’s not always fun. The uniqueness and perspective of others makes the workplace a super-challenging place to be.

We’re never really “done” with this work because as people we are all unique snowflake-like creatures. But you CAN develop a practice that makes you more comfortable and confident dealing with others. That is much of what I talk about with clients, and in these posts.

#2: We are always a work in progress.

I don’t know about you, but I am always working on myself. In his landmark book The Fifth Discipline, Peter Senge introduces the topic of personal mastery as a lifelong process of continuous learning.

“Personal mastery,” he writes, “Is the phrase we use for the discipline of personal growth and learning…People with a high level of personal mastery live in in a continual learning mode. They never “arrive.” It is a process. It is a lifelong discipline.”

The challenge is you can’t reach a continual discipline of growth and learning by wishing and hoping other people will change. The root of your personal mastery practice is you. So it makes sense that we are drawn to articles that help us deal with our very personal perspective on work, and life.
